Dr Portland Jones

Portland Jones is a writer, horse trainer and lecturer.

She has spent many years working with horses and other animals implementing the science of learning to improve training outcomes and welfare. Along with Dr Andrew McLean she rewrote the Australian Pony Club curriculum so that it was evidence based and she also lectures in equine behaviour at Murdoch University.

Portland has a PhD in Literature. She published the book Horses Hate Surprise Parties: Equitation science for young riders and in 2025 her next non-fiction book Connected: Our journey with the horse will be coming out with Exisle Press. Her first novel Seeing the Elephant was shortlisted for the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award. Her second novel Only Birds Above was published by Fremantle Press.

Portland is also a trainer with the Help Foundation, a charity that aims to improve the welfare of captive elephants across Asia through the implementation of evidence based training and management strategies.
